The Kaduna State Police Command on Wednesday, January 31, said it has arrested a syndicate of three internet fraudsters known for defrauding unsuspecting students of Kaduna State University (KASU) out of their tuition fees.
In a statement released, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mansir Hassan, said the suspects defrauded about 300 students to the tune of 60 million naira over time.
According to Mansir, the suspects are identified as Muhammad Usman Busari of Naria Kaduna, AbdulAziz Hamza of Hayin Dan-mani Kaduna and Noel Nims Audiya.
Explaining how these suspects carried out their nefarious activities, Mansir said they were known to hack the student registration portal and unduly exploit students who preferred to pay their tuition fees online rather than through regular banking platforms.
“Suspects often charge students the full tuition fee but deposit a smaller amount into a state Treasury Account (TSA), and intercept and manipulate electronic transaction receipts from the TSA to read complete payment information.” .”
He said the suspects have so far defrauded over three hundred KASU students and the total amount is estimated to be over N60 million, of which the main suspect, Muhammad Usman Busari, used it for construction and equipment houses, purchase of cars, electronics, appliances and properties in Kaduna and Kwara States.
“The suspects have since been prosecuted,” he said. has established a cybercrime unit whose mission is to investigate cybercrime-related crimes.
Victims of social media account hacking, fake shopping notifications, fake social romance and cryptocurrency/forex scams and many other crimes in the state can now report them, a police spokesperson said .
