Three officers were fired by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly engaging in extortion and armed robbery.
On Tuesday, January 30, while parading suspects at the state headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, state Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alamutu revealed this.
Alongside 27 other alleged kidnappers, armed robbers, and cults, the police officers were paraded.
The head of police said that after receiving a report from a student at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode named Kashimao Emmanuel, three police personnel and a civilian were taken into custody.
He identified the suspects as Cpl. Idowu Sunday, an employee of the Ijebu-Ife division, Inspectors Taiwo Kolawole and John Ogbe, as well as one civilian, Adesiyan Mathew, who was purported to be the driver.
Alamutu said the complainant alleged that he was approached by a group of four armed individuals while he was driving his brown Toyota Venza, registration number LSD 813 EX. Three of the males were wearing muftis, while one of the men was donning a police round neck camouflage.
He complied when one of them fired a gun into the air during the operation. After getting into his car and driving him away towards the Sagamu Expressway, they made a U-turn in Ososa and went to Ijebu-Ode, where N312,000 was forcibly transferred from his account to an Opay account, according to Alamutu.
According to the head of police, two more complainants who had been victims of similar thefts in the past came forward throughout the course of the inquiry and named the suspects.
According to Alamutu, the police officers were discharged after being tried in a formal room.
“They’ll face charges in court as soon as possible,” he stated.
