9 people injured in suspected acid attack in London

Nine people were injured after a caustic substance was thrown at a woman and two young children in south London.

At around 7.25pm ​​on Wednesday 31 January, Metropolitan Police were called to reports of a woman and two children being injured by a suspected corrosive substance in Lesser Avenue, Clapham.

In addition, six people, three civilians and three police officers, were injured during the rescue. Five people involved were taken to the hospital.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said firefighters used specialist equipment to detect corrosive substances believed to have been used in the first attack.

They added: “Firefighters were called to a chemical incident on Lesser Street in Clapham this evening.

“Emergency services, working with partners, provided emergency treatment to a woman and two children.

“Five other people were treated at the scene. They were all taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service. Crews also used specialized equipment to detect corrosive materials believed to have been used in the incident.

“The brigade was called out at 7.35pm and firefighters finished the incident at 9.21pm. Two fire engines from Clapham and Battersea fire stations attended the scene.

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said:

“We dispatched a number of emergency responders to the accident scene, including two emergency responders, three paramedics, and members of the Hazardous Area Response Team.”
