Trade unions have proposed a minimum wage of US$300 (436,500 naira) for Nigerian workers ahead of negotiations on a new national minimum wage.
The Coalition Chairman of the Joint Conference of the National Public Service Bargaining Council (JNPSNC), Comrade Benjamin Anthony, said at the 2023 meeting of the National Public Service Individual Bargaining Council and the Joint National Public Service Bargaining Council in Goshen City, Nasarawa State. I made this suggestion.
The union notes that the current minimum wage of N30,000 has since been hampered by the high exchange rate and the sudden removal of fuel subsidies, which has affected the high cost of living in the country, and hence the new wage. He said that there are demands for this.
Anthony also spoke on behalf of the Union Secretary, Comrade Boma Mohammed, who complained about the recent delay in payment of salaries to workers by the Federal Government, saying that this trend must stop and that this trend in the country must be stopped. He said we must prevent such suffering from happening again. , I can’t stand it anymore.
He said: “In view of the above, the Labor Party has proposed a living wage of US$300 (N436,500) for Nigerian workers. This is due to the decline in currency values. Today, if you take 100,000 naira to the market, you will come back with a leather bag full of items.
“We call on the government to immediately clear the N35,000 wage premium arrears along with current and accelerated measures to obtain a new living wage that will bring relief to the working class. I ask,” he added.
This was announced after Vice President Kassim Shettima inaugurated the committee in Abuja on Tuesday, saying the decision is aimed at ensuring decent livelihoods and has been implemented in several areas. This is in line with the current National Minimum Wage Act of 2019. The year expires in a few months.
