The Jimeta Chief Magistrate Court in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, on Wednesday ordered the remand of three fishermen and two businessmen from a correctional center on suspicion of conspiracy and fish theft.
Aminu Mohammed (27), Yauba Musa (25), Abubakar Mohammed (31), Halima Musa (21) and Amira Sani (23) are from Jerio village in Yola. , is being tried before Chief Justice Awamem Fuwa.
Police charged the five defendants with conspiracy, trespassing, menacing, theft, aggravated assault, and possession of stolen property.
All defendants pleaded not guilty.
Presiding Judge Fuwa ordered her to be detained until February 7 for further police investigation.
Earlier, the state prosecutor, Sergeant Emmanuel Paul, told the court that Abdulrazaq Abubakar, chairman of Gerio River Fish Farm in Yola, reported the matter to Jambutu Police Station on January 27.
He alleged that on that day, the first, second and third defendants criminally conspired and entered the Jerio River tank armed with knives, cutlass fish, cages and the like.
They are said to have stolen various quantities of fried and fresh fish belonging to various operators in the area.
Prosecutors said security guard Haruna Jada raised the alarm when the defendants tried to flee, but she was beaten and injured by the defendants.
During the police investigation, it was discovered that the stolen fish were in the possession of the fourth and fifth defendants.
The prosecution argued that the crime violates sections 79, 60, 333, 276 and 288 of the Adamawa State Criminal Law Act 2018.
He opposed the defendant’s bail application, who had pleaded not guilty, citing the ongoing police investigation and the potential risk that the trial would be jeopardized if granted bail.
Ultimately, the chief magistrate remanded the suspects to the correctional center and adjourned the case until February 7 for hearing.
