The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has cancelled the results of some academics who engaged in malpractice during the professional qualifying examination (PQE) held recently.
The council additionally disclosed that of the 15,753 academics who sat for the examination across the country, about 3,963 failed.
The Registrar of the council, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, said: “All the instances of examination malpractice reported have been taken care of accordingly all over the country at the management level. And the results have been cancelled as punitive measures. All the instances have been recognized or recorded simply because we have facts against them”.
Speaking further, Ajiboye insisted that the teaching career was no longer an all-comers affair or a “job for the boys”.
He disclosed that thus far, over 23. million academics have been registered, out of which over 400,000 have been totally licensed by the council.
He restated that about 50 per cent of academics in private faculties are not qualified, saying the council would quickly begin to clamp down on them.
To obtain this, Ajiboye hinted at moves by the council to get a fiat from the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which would empower it to prosecute, and go after erring faculties.
He said: “The difficulty we have is that schooling is on the concurrent list. These private faculties are not registered by the Federal Government; we have been discussing with the states to affirm the list of their academics to be sure they are qualified”.
